Mark Catesby (1683-1749) was an Englishman who came to the colonies in 1712 and spent 7 years exploring the flora and fauna. He returned in 1722 with the intent of creating a natural history collection of drawings and watercolors of plants and animals he saw in the southern British colonies of North America. He published his Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands was published to great acclaim in 1729. He was the first person to publish information in Europe about the Carolina Paroquet.
